Financial Aid Information
  • Attention Seniors
All seniors who are planning to attend college should complete the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) even if they think they will not qualify for financial aid. Completing the FAFSA can qualify students for additional scholarships, grants and loans. The online application is available at www.fafsa.ed.gov

beginning October 1. The Michigan deadline to submit is March 1.  Important!  Don't wait for the deadline - submit the application as soon as possible!

Note: The FAFSA needs to be completed each year a student plans to enroll in college.

In order to submit the FAFSA online, both the student and his/her parent must have an FSA ID.  The FSA ID can be created at www.fafsa.ed.gov.

Scholarship Information
  •
Scholarships are a type of financial aid awarded to students to be used for financing their post-secondary education. They help defray the cost of college attendance and do not have to be repaid. Scholarships are available from a variety of sources including colleges or universities you plan to attend, major corporations, parents’ employers, internet searches, etc. In addition, local community and county organizations realize the importance of post-secondary education and offer a wide variety of scholarship opportunities to deserving seniors.

Each scholarship opportunity is its own entity with different deadlines, criteria, and supplemental materials to be included for consideration (letters of recommendation, essays, transcript, etc.). Scholarships may be based on financial need, academic or other merit, minority status, religious preference, etc. The quest for scholarships is particularly competitive in this difficult economic time, especially if your ACT score, GPA, class rank and academic course load has not been particularly rigorous.

Although the quest for scholarships is not difficult, it does require a great deal of organization and diligence in order to meet deadlines and maintain files (dates of submission, criteria for each scholarship, date to claim award, follow up contact information, etc.). This makes it extremely important to have some sort of organizational process in place to record the scholarships applied for. For this reason, a Scholarship Application Tracker is included in the Senior Success Guide that all seniors receive in early fall. Additional copies of the form can be printed by clicking the following: Scholarship Application Tracker.
  • Local and County Scholarships
There are many local and Sanilac County scholarships available to graduating seniors. A list of these scholarships and links to each application can be found in Career Cruising. Students can access this information by logging in to their Career Cruising account, clicking on the Financial Aid tab at the top and then the Local Scholarshipstab. Scholarships are continually added and updated so students should check the Local and County Scholarshiplist on a regular basis. Due dates are subject to change so it is important to verify all dates and submit applications on time.

Many applications are mailed or submitted directly to the organization, but some of the local scholarship applications must be turned in to the high school guidance office by the posted deadline to be forwarded to the local organization or the Sanilac County Community Foundation. Students are reminded to record all scholarships applied for on their Scholarship Application Tracker.

For additional information or questions, students should contact Mrs. Helwig, the high school guidance counselor.
